"HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE? A HOLOCAUST CURRICULUM FOR AND BY TEACHERS™" PILOTS IN PALM BEACH COUNTY

For the past year, Kimberly Coombs, (Lerner Fellow 2022) Program Planner of Holocaust Studies (K-12), Palm Beach County School District and inSIGHT Through Education, one of JFR’s Holocaust Centers of Excellence located in Palm Beach County, has been working with the JFR on our new online program, How Was it Possible? A Holocaust Curriculum For and By Teachers™. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Kimberly and Stanlee presented JFR’s new online program at a Symposium for Social Studies Teachers in Palm Beach County, FL. Four teachers from Palm Beach County School District worked on developing the curriculum. These Lerner Fellow are Tawny Anderson (who is now retired), Maureen Carter, Marie-Amalie Farris (who is retired) and Bradd Weinberg.

The JFR is indebted to Kimberly Coombs and Kelly Warsaw, President & CEO of inSIGHT Through Education, for their support of the curriculum and for their efforts in making the curriculum available for Palm Beach County educators.

TEACHER INTRODUCTION PROGRAMS FOR "HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE? A HOLOCAUST CURRICULUM FOR AND BY TEACHERS™"

Mindy Walker and Amy McDonald presented How Was it Possible? A Holocaust Curriculum For and By Teachers™ on in August at a two-day district-wide professional development for Tuscaloosa County Schools (Alabama). Mindy and Amy are Lerner Fellows and both educators worked on developing the curriculum. Mindy prepared lessons 2.3 and 4.1 and Amy prepared lesson 5.3, 6.2, and 8.1

Amy also presented the curriculum at the Alabama History Institute in Birmingham on June 25-27.

On September 25, 2024, Stanlee Stahl will be presenting the curriculum at a program offered by the Holocaust Education Resource Council in Tallahassee, FL. Click here for information on the program.

2025 ADVANCED SEMINAR

We announced the 2025 Advanced Seminar in the August 2024 Alfred Lerner Fellows e-Newsletter and in a separate email on August 15, 2024. The Advanced Seminar is scheduled for January 18-19, 2025. The program will be held at the Hilton Newark Airport.

The following scholars will be presenting, Professors Thomas Doherty from Brandeis, Kirsten Fermaglich from Michigan State, Daniel Greene, and Peter Hayes from Northwestern. The focus of the 2025 Advanced Seminar will be “America and the Holocaust.” The 2025 Advanced Seminar will be limited to 22 participants. We have 1 spot left. Completed applications are due Thursday, October 31, 2024. The participant fee is $425. A shared hotel room for Friday and Saturday nights is included in the participant fee. If you want a single room, the additional cost is $150 per night.

2024 Summer Institute for Teachers Breakout Session

2025 SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS – June 21 – 25, 2025

The 2025 Summer Institute for Teachers (SIT) will be held June 21 – 25, 2025 and will be held at the Hilton Newark Airport. Announcement of the 2025 SIT program will be emailed to centers later this fall. It is suggested that centers begin identifying their nominees for the 2025 program.

RESCUER AWARDS WERE SENT IN JULY

In July, awards were sent to each JFR-supported rescuer. We would like to share some of the photos and notes we received – click here to see them. The rescuers thank you for remembering them and for making their lives easier with the financial help they receive from the JFR.

JFR POSTER SET ON RESCUE

A number of Lerner Fellow have requested copies of the JFR Poster Set on Rescue. Unfortunately, the JFR’s Poster Set on Rescue has been out-of-print for several years. We are considering issuing an updated Poster Set on Rescue and we are looking for Lerner Fellows to help update the Poster Set. We will meet via Zoom.
