JFR MOURNS THE PASSING OF STANISLAW WROBEL
Stanislaw Wrobel, a Righteous Gentile from Poland, passed away on August 4, 2022, at the age of 102. Stanisław and his parents, Stanisław and Karolina Wróbel sheltered Jakób and Sara Frenkiel, their son Hershel (born 1936), and Bella Rosenberg, Sara’s sister, from November 22, 1942 until January 18, 1945. At the time of his death, Stanislaw was the JFR’s oldest living rescuer. The JFR began funding Stanislaw in June 1989. May Mr. Wrobel’s memory be a blessing.
2023 ADVANCED SEMINAR
An announcement of the 2023 Advanced Seminar, which is January 14 – 16 2023, will be emailed later this month. The program will be held at the Hilton Newark Airport. The following scholars will be presenting: Professor Peter Hayes, Professor Paul Hanebrink; and Professor Jeffrey Veidlinger. We are waiting to hear back from our last scholar. The 2023 Advanced Seminar will be limited to 24 participants. Completed applications will be due Monday, October 24, 2022. The participant fee will be $425 and covers lodging for Saturday and Sunday nights. Everyone will have their own room and the JFR will cover the single supplement for the 2023 program.

2023 SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS
The 2023 Summer Institute for Teachers (SIT) will be held at the end of June. The exact dates have not been finalized. To give everyone a heads up, we may switch the SIT to the Hilton Newark Airport. This is based on feedback from the participants at the 2022 SIT.
Announcement of the 2023 SIT program will be emailed to centers later this fall. It is suggested that centers begin identifying their nominees for the 2023 program.
2023 EUROPEAN STUDY PROGRAM
The 2023 European Study Program will be to Germany and Poland. Professor Robert Jan van Pelt will be our scholar. If you are interested in participating in the 2023 European Study Program please let Stanlee know. If you were planning on participating in the 2020 European Study Program please reach out to Stanlee to let her know if you are still interested in participating in the 2023 program.
The dates and itinerary of the European Study Program will be confirmed later this fall. This specific study program to Germany and Poland will be the last one that Professor van Pelt and Stanlee will be offering. There will be other study programs, just not two weeks to Germany and Poland.
EXPLORING JFR DOCUMENTARIES AND RESCUER STORIES
As you begin to plan your Holocaust unit, if you have not already done so, please explore the JFR’s rescuer section on our website. The rescuer section contains more than 175 individual stories of rescue. In the documentary section you will find award-winning documentaries of rescue stories. The documentaries are short, between 11 and 15 minutes, and are perfect for a classroom period. If you would like additional information on either the rescue stories or the documentaries, please reach out to Andrew Buchanan at [email protected]. We continue to add rescue stories to our website.
CONSIDER SENDING BIRTHDAY WISHES
We received a request from Jay Kozlowski, son of Holocaust survivor Edith London Kozlowski, who turns 100 this September, asking that birthday cards be sent to his mom. Originally from Radom, Poland, Edith survived the Radom ghetto, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, and after liberation spent time in a displaced persons camp in southern Germany. Edith rebuilt her life in Michigan where she has 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The constraints of COVID have been especially hard for Edith, so if you are interested in sending birthday wishes, please contact Andrew Buchanan at [email protected] and he will provide further details.
#LAST SEEN – PICTURES OF NAZI DEPORTATIONS PROJECT
We received a request from the USC’s Center for Advanced Genocide Research, and the Arolsen Archives in Bad Arolsen, Germany to pass on information regarding a multi-institutional research project which aims to gather, analyze, and publish photos of Nazi mass deportations of Jews, Romani people and people with disabilities from the German Reich between 1938 and 1945.
