Lectures from 2017 Summer Institute for Teachers
At the 2017 Summer Institute for Teachers, the JFR taped a number of the lectures. Each month we are going to feature one lecture from a scholar who presented at the 2017 Summer Institute for Teachers. This month we are posting Professor Volker Berghahn’s Lecture. Click here to see the video. Professor Berghahn presented on chapter one of How Was It Possible? A Holocaust Reader – “The Context”. Professor Berghahn addressed the inter-war period.
News from the Classroom
Gene Woods, Lerner Fellow 2016, just completed an outstanding project with his students using the JFR’s Poster Set on Rescue. Gene teaches history and the Holocaust at Bayonne High School in Bayonne, NJ. Below is information on the project.
After my students studied a variety of stories about rescue and Upstanders during the Holocaust, I had them examine the large JFR poster set. Then, I provided them with the JRF website and I led them to the page that contains the biographies for the many rescuers. I asked them to choose a rescuer whom they admired and they had to create an identity chart for that person.
In order to create an identity chart the students had to use at least 5 words to describe the person and they had to draw an object that truly represents that individual.
When the students had to bring in their work, I allowed them to work in expert groups to share and discuss the lives of each person.
Then, we discussed their own identity charts and how they could become like the Upstanders they examined.
JFR Exhibit Opens in Georgetown, Texas
Stanlee received a warm Texas welcome when the JFR traveling exhibit on rescue opened at the Public Library in Georgetown, Texas, on Sunday, March 18 2018. Stanlee provided docent training prior to the opening of the exhibit and presented on Saturday evening for Congregation Havurah Shalom and for the public on Sunday afternoon. If you are in the Georgetown, Texas area, please do stop by the library. The exhibit will be up through April 18, 2018.
