The 2023 Advanced Seminar was held over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. It was good to see everyone in person! Our four scholars, Dr. Nicholas Coddington; Professor Peter Hayes, Professor Paul Hanebrink, and Professor Jeffrey Veidlinger, were outstanding! If anyone would like to receive the reading assignment for the Advanced Seminar, please let Stanlee know and it will be emailed to you. Click here to see the photo gallery.
We are starting to plan the 2024 program. If you would like to have a specific topic or area addressed or to hear from a particular scholar, please let Stanlee know.
At the request of a Lerner Fellow, we developed a badge for use in your email signature. To copy the badge, right-click on it and save the file. We have included two versions – a full resolution version and a compressed version – please use the version that works for you. You will probably need to resize the badge to fit your email signature. At the 2023 Advanced Seminar we asked participants if they thought we should hold our 2023 Summer Institute for Teachers (SIT) at Columbia University or at the Hilton Newark Airport. The vote was to have the program at Columbia. In 2022, we held the SIT at the Hilton Newark Airport as Columbia was not permitting outside groups to be lodged on campus. We have our seminar room and lodging at Columbia for this June. The main issue is that Columbia’s Conference Housing office may not provide linen service or room cleaning service as they did prior to COVID. This means that participants will have to bring their own linens which is not a viable for us. I will keep everyone posted. An email on the Summer Institute has been sent to center directors and education directors. Applications for the 2023 Summer Institute are due in the JFR office Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
Information on the 2023 European Study Program to Germany and Poland will be emailed in February. The itinerary and travel arrangements are being firmed up. This will probably be our last study program to Germany and Poland as it is currently structured. We anticipate leaving the U.S. on July 1 and returning on July 15, 2023.
The Study Program starts in Munich and ends in Auschwitz where we spend four nights. Professor Robert Jan van Pelt is our scholar for the program. It is possible for teachers attending the 2023 Summer Institute for Teachers to participate in the European Study Program. Please let Stanlee know if you are interested in participating in the 2023 European Study Program.
We mourn the passing of Michael Marrus, a globally renowned Holocaust scholar, on December 23, 2022. Michael was a good friend of the JFR and gave the keynote lecture at the JFR’s first Summer Institute in June 2000. Michael lectured at the SIT for years. May Michael’s memory be a blessing. Here is a link to his obituary.
Friday, January 27, 2023, was International Holocaust Commemoration Day. We received these photos from the Polish Society for the Righteous. We thought we would share them with you.
Last month we wrote about our Christmas awards for the rescuers. In November/December 2022, the JFR sent each JFR supported Righteous Gentile a special award of $3,000 for the purchase of food during the Christmas holiday season, for home heating fuel, and for medications. Here is a link to several thank you letters from rescuers.
Consider writing a short piece about your Holocaust unit for the Lerner Fellows eNewsletter.
