On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Stanlee Stahl and Bernadette Bennett (Lerner Fellow 2001) presented the JFR’s new online program, How Was It Possible? A Holocaust Curriculum For and By Teachers™ at a Symposium for Social Studies teachers in Palm Beach County, FL. A big thank you Kim Coombs (Lerner Fellow 2022) who made it possible for us to present and to inSight Through Education, JFR’s Holocaust Center of Excellence in Palm Beach County, for their support of Holocaust education. We did three sessions with some 70 teachers attending. The response to the program was outstanding! It was also great seeing so many Lerner Fellows at the Symposium! We will be providing additional information on the program in October.
An announcement of the 2024 Advanced Seminar, which is January 13 – 15 2024, will be emailed later this month. The program will be held at the Hilton Newark Airport. The 2024 Advanced Seminar will be limited to 24 participants. Completed applications will be due Monday, October 23, 2023. The participant fee will be $425 and covers lodging for Saturday and Sunday nights. Everyone will have their own room and the JFR will cover the single supplement for the 2024 program. We will not be accepting commuter applications this year.
If you are interested in attending, please let Stanlee know at [email protected].
The 2024 Summer Institute for Teachers will be held at the end of June at the Hilton Newark Airport. The exact dates have not been finalized. Announcement of the 2024 SIT program will be emailed to centers later this fall. It is suggested that centers begin identifying their nominees for the 2024 program.
As you begin to plan your Holocaust unit, if you have not already done so, please explore the JFR’s rescuer section on our website by clicking on the following links. The rescuer section contains more than 175 individual stories of rescue. In the documentary section you will find award-winning documentaries of rescue stories. The documentaries are short, between 11 and 15 minutes, and are perfect for a classroom period. We continue to add rescue stories to our website.
Please do let us know how you are doing and consider writing a piece for the Alfred Lerner Fellows eNewsletter.
